Learning About Voodoo in Ouidah, Benin

Voodoo was born in the region between Ouidah and Abomey, Benin a few centuries ago. Today, the small town of Ouidah is the Voodoo capital of the world. Nearly 80% of Benin’s population practices Voodoo and the country’s ‘feticheurs’ are very powerful. The first thing people told me, and something I’d hear over and over again is how Voodoo is widely misinterpreted because of Hollywood films where Voodoo dolls are used to inflict harm upon others. In fact, the practitioners of Voodoo don’t use Voodoo dolls and only use Voodoo to do good, although I was told there are some exceptions.
